A sure way to strengthen our faith in God and find His purpose active in our lives is to pursue understanding His word. Psalm 119 is the longest single section of scripture (176 verses) and its objective is to demonstrate the power of God’s word in the every day lives of His people. God’s word is powerful to save (Rom 1:16) not just our souls but also our hearts and minds from the trouble and deception of this world. Understanding is key to it saving us. Notice the prayers of the psalmist toward understanding (Psa 119:34, 73, 125, 144, 169):

Give me understanding, and I will keep your law

and obey it with all my heart.

Your hands made me and formed me;

give me understanding to learn your commands.

I am your servant; give me discernment

that I may understand your statutes.

Your statutes are forever right;

give me understanding that I may live.

May my cry come before you, O Lord;

give me understanding according to your word.

If we honestly desire understanding, we must seek to humble our selves, be willing to work at it, love the word, trust the word, desire obedience, undergird our study of God’s word with prayer, and confess that as much as we want understanding, God wants it for us even more. If we can adopt an attitude filled with these traits our understanding, in 2017 will grow.

Peace,
