The blessing we seek comes not from
the world, but from God. The world offers, offers to sell us, many so called blessings that are thought to
give life the richest of meaning. In reality, what the world offers us is things
that lie on the surface of this life and bring temporary pleasure at best. The
world seeks to feed our pleasures for its own profit.

            God
seeks to feed our souls by His word and bless our spirits with eternal life.
God seeks to give our lives true and profound purpose. God’s profound and
eternal purpose will sustain us through the hard times we suffer on the surface
of this life and glorify Him as the God who paid the purchase price for us! We
can choose the eternal blessings of God’s word and God’s way, or we can choose
the temporary blessings the world is
trying to sell us. Psalm 1 is a good example of how we can choose the blessing
of a sustained life and the eternal purpose of God:

      Blessed is the man

who does not walk in
the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way
of sinners

or sit in the seat
of mockers.

2     But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he
meditates day and night.

3     He is like a tree planted by streams of
water,

which yields its
fruit in season

and whose leaf does not
wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

4     Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows
away.

5     Therefore the wicked will not stand in the
judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the
righteous.

6     For the Lord
watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.
