Jesus describes the nature of His kingdom in ways that declare it to be the kingdom of heaven, not a kingdom of this world.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

The reign of Christ will bless not only His disciples but also the world through His disciples.  Jesus uses salt to describe the nature of what they will have in the kingdom of Christ.  Salt had many purposes for the Jews, but salt carried special significance regarding the enduring and lasting elements of the covenant:

  • God’s provision for the Priesthood – Numbers 18:19
  • God’s enduring promise for David to reign – 2 Chronicles 13:5
  • Gifts offered by God’s people upon the alter – Leviticus 2:13
