Jesus tells the Pharisees to stop judging by mere appearances and make a right judgment (Jn 7:24). They judged Christ, judging His acts of mercy by what they could see from the outward circumstances. Actually, their judgment of Jesus’ actions came from their hearts. For, God’s word did not abide in their hearts nor was God’s love in their hearts (Jn 5:38, 42).

If we just let it, the word of Christ can dwell richly in the hearts of Christians (Col 3:16), and, in addition, God has poured out His love into our hearts by His promised Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39; Rom 5:5). So, we can and should make our judgments about our lives from the perspective of His word and love! The more our minds dwell on His word, and we listen to His promises, the more easily His word dwells in our hearts – for where your treasure is, there will your heart be, also (Luke 12:34). Psalm 37 reminds us that God has always given His people perspective that judges life beyond mere appearances:

1     Do not fret because of evil men

or be envious of those who do wrong;

2     for like the grass they will soon wither,

like green plants they will soon die away.

3     Trust in the Lord and do good;

dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4     Delight yourself in the Lord

and He will give you the desires of your heart.

5     Commit your way to the Lord;

trust in Him and He will do this:

6     He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,

the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

7     Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him;

do not fret when men succeed in their ways,

when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8     Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret—it leads only to evil.

9     For evil men will be cut off,

but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

10    A little while, and the wicked will be no more;

though you look for them, they will not be found.

11    But the meek will inherit the land

      and enjoy great peace.

      . . . The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;

He is their stronghold in time of trouble.

40    The Lord helps them and delivers them;

He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,

because they take refuge in Him (Ps 37:1-11, 39-40).

God bless you to see life around you from the perspective of His great promises and the truth of His word. This world will not last, and it cannot hold lasting treasure and reward for those who seek life eternal!

Peace,

Jay Don
