Family takes us back to our origin, the place we were born. It is our identity. It charges us with our purpose, our character. It brings to us heritage and inheritance. The church is God’s family, a family born of God by the water and the Spirit (1Tim 3:15; Gal 6:10; Jn 3:3-5; 1Jn 5:1-5).
God has offered to us everything we need for life and godliness, and He has offered to us certain qualities of His own divine nature. A continuing and increasing measure of these qualities will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Pet 1:3-4, 5-8). We are to diligently seek to add to our faith, goodness and in that goodness, knowledge, and in that knowledge self control and in that self control, perseverance/endurance/patience (2 Pet 1:5-6).
When we make the decision to love, we are making the decision to imitate God. If Christianity can be accomplished by human force then it is empowered by the flesh. Christ does not reign by human force (cf. Jn 6:15). God’s call to us in the gospel is a call for us to choose the way of faith and the Spirit so that we may participate in God’s divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by fleshly lusts (Eph 5:1; Col 1:13; 2 Pet 1:3-8).
