John 15:13 (NASB)
“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends…”
Memorial Day, a time when we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed was more important, the freedom of others. Jesus talked about the greatest love one could have for others. He said it was to lay down ones own life:
12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
14 “You are My friends if you do what I command you.
15 “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
17 “This I command you, that you love one another (John 15:12–17 NASB).
As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, it bears upon us to do all that we can to sustain and share its blessings with those we call friend. More importantly, this Lord’s Day we give memorial to Him who came not to be served, but to serve and give His own life as the total ransom for many (Mark 10:45). It is our God-given capacity to give our lives up for the good of others (Rom 5:5,8). It is by God’s grace through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus that we are able to call one another “friend” in Him, and we do honor His memory when we keep His command to “love one another” (John 15:13,17).
