Is God No. 1?
I heard about a couple that was celebrating their second anniversary. The husband arranged to have flowers sent to his wife at her office. He told the florist to write “Happy Anniversary, Year Number 2″ on the card.
His wife was thrilled with the flowers, but not so pleased with the card. It mistakenly read, “Happy Anniversary. You’re Number 2.”
While I chuckle at that story, the truth of the matter is that if the same thing had happened to my wife, she would have reacted in a totally different way — she would have been thrilled! Perhaps a word of explanation is in order as I share something very private with you.
While we were dating, I came up with a pet name for Sueanne. She was my “little number two” (usually written as “lil no. 2″). That was how I would address her when I wrote her notes or sent her cards — “Lil no. 2.” That was my way of saying to her, “God comes first in my life, but you are se
cond.”
It never bothered Sueanne that she was number two in my life. She never saw that as an insult. In fact, I think she understood that as long as God stood in the number one place in my life, she would always be treated with dignity, love and compassion. We are approaching 29 years of married life, and she remains my “lil no. 2.” She always has been, she always will be. She will never be number one. But that’s OK with her.
Mark 12:30 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Seek to make God number one in your life and I promise it will improve your relationship with “number two.” -TFTD
God bless you all and have a great week,
Michael
Who Really Made You?
You most likely have heard someone say, “The devil made me do it,” or “If you didn’t want me to eat that, (use it, take it, etc), you shouldn’t have left it laying around.” Perhaps you have heard someone, in trying to excuse their actions say, “Well, all the other guys (or girls) were doing it!”
It seems part of our human makeup to try and ascribe the blame to someone else, anyone else or anything else, other than to accept blame ourselves. Sometimes folks will even try to blame God for their mistakes in life. You will hear people say things like, “Well, God just made me that way,” or “God shouldn’t have put that temptation in front of me,” rather than admit any guilt themselves.
I don’t know about you, but I was raised to believe that people can’t MAKE you do anything you don’t really want to do, (this is taking into account the exception of them using violence against you to force you). Having said that I need to ask the question, “Do you believe that?”
Well what does the scripture have to say about this? I was reading the book of James today and this passage stuck with me. Notice what James says in James 1:13-15, “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (NIV) Perhaps another modern translation will make this idea a little clearer. “And remember, no one who wants to do wrong should ever say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and He never tempts anyone else either. Temptation comes from the lure of our own evil desires. These evil desires lead to evil actions, and evil actions lead to death.” (NLT)
One of the interesting things about this passage is the word translated from the Greek language as “entice” in the first translation and “lure” in the second. The Greek has a more specific meaning and gives us perhaps a picture of someone out fishing. The idea behind the word is, “to catch with bait”, such as putting a worm on a hook for a fish. So what James is pointing out is that we sometimes, “Catch ourselves with bait we have put on the hook ourselves, luring and tempting ourselves until we finally give in.”
Perhaps we need to take a close look at our lives and consider what we may be setting before ourselves to tempt us into something from which we should stay away. No one else can MAKE us sin, we do it to ourselves. Sure the Devil is there cheering us on to make the wrong decision through television, movies, magazines and supposed friends, but we make the final decision ourselves. The Devil doesn’t MAKE us do it and neither does God.
Are there things you need to put away and stay away from in your life? You know how it works and what you need to do, just do it! - Russ Lawson

Feeling Lost?
I’ll admit to a moment of panic. I was in Brazil, traveling with two other people, one of them Brazilian. It was comforting to travel with someone who knew the language and knew exactly where we were going. We were taking a flight from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. Instead of walking through a jet way, we rode out to the plane on buses. As luck would have it, my colleagues were placed on the first bus, while I had to wait for the second one. I wasn’t too concerned, since I knew that we’d still end up in the same place. I calmly watched their bus depart, the
n boarded mine and left to join them.
But, when I got on the plane and found the row where our seats were, my friends weren’t there! That’s when I felt a twinge of panic. I knew they had to be on the plane, yet I couldn’t find them anywhere. I had no idea how to get to where I was going, and I had no idea how to find the people that did know. I quickly turned to one of the stewardesses and asked her, in Spanish, if this was the plane to Rio de Janeiro. Speaking Spanish in a Portuguese-speaking country is a desperate ploy, but she understood my question and assured me that I was on the correct flight. She continued to give me further information in Portuguese, but I was no longer trying to understand her, as I saw my colleagues coming through the door of the plane. For some reason, their bus had taken a long time in getting from the terminal to the plane. I was in the right place after all.
Luckily, when it comes to our spiritual lives, we can always know the way.
On the night that Jesus was arrested, He told His disciples that He was going somewhere to prepare a place for them. He told them that they knew the way to where He was going. Thomas replied, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” And that’s when Jesus spoke these famous words: “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:3-6)
Not knowing the way is an unpleasant feeling. It’s all right when we can depend on someone else, but when we’re all alone, feeling lost is pretty scary. Luckily, when it comes to our spiritual lives, we can always know the way. Jesus is the way. We can put our trust in Him, knowing that He will always take us where we need to be. To get past our feelings of being lost in this world, all we really need to know is Jesus. - Herald of Truth
God bless you all and have a great week,
