We begin our lives, in this world, being educated practically and formally. Initially we are taught at the will/discretion of others. This is a “forced education” that is for our own benefit, survival. Unfortunately, some never progress beyond this realm. They live life learning only what which will feed their fleshly appetites, their god is the stomach (Php 3:19). The rest of us mature, if you will, to the point that we accept responsibility for our education, our learning, as it impacts others. We decide to learn and live in a responsible way, not in a selfish way.

Jesus said that the Kingdom, Christianity, is a life chosen by education – John 6:45. He said this while teaching at the synagogue in Capernaum. We must choose to be taught by God, but being taught by God is not just a gathering of information; it is submitting ourselves to His word. What are we going to do with what we learn from God? Do we selfishly use it for our own benefit, our own survival? Do we accept its challenge to live our lives in benefit of others for God’s own glory? It is no wonder that God is glorified in Christ Jesus, because this is what Jesus did, in the flesh, He submitted Himself to God’s will (Jn 1:14; 4:34; Php 2:5-11). It is also no wonder that the church, in Christ Jesus, lives to glorify God (Eph 3:20-21).

God’s word is calling us, not just to survive spiritually, but to be transformed from a life of death (John 12:25; Rom 6:23) to living a life of love, a life of benefit to others and God’s glory. This is the only kind of life we can choose to live that will in turn allow us to save our lives, our souls, for eternity.

Matt 16:24–26 –  Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? (NIV)

God, grant us the faith in You required to learn from you and live for you, Amen!
